Sponsored by Rising for Justice (formerly DC Law Students in Court)
The DC Pro Bono Week Expungement Clinic provides the opportunity to represent indigent clients in sealing their DC criminal records.
At the clinic, attorneys will conduct intake interviews and eligibility determinations for attendees. Rising for Justice will place appropriate clients for pro bono representation after the event. Rising for Justice will conduct all outreach to ensure client attendance and pro bono placement after the event.
Overview of work:
Attorneys may work alone or in pairs to conduct a 30 to 45-minute client interview and subsequent eligibility determination. They will have the option to continue representation of their client after the clinic at their respective law firms.
Time commitment: 1 to 3 hours, exclusive of training, depending on the number of attendees served in total.
Training to represent clients in DC records sealing will be in-person, on-site on the day of the event. This training will last approximately 30 minutes. Pro bono attorney mentoring will take place throughout the duration of the event.
Rising for Justice also will give you access to a resource bank that contains expungement materials and sample motions. The attorneys at Rising for Justice will be available to provide as much guidance as you may need throughout your Expungement case.
We hope to welcome you to the Rising for Justice family and share the rewards of pro bono service. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Pro Bono Director Gwendolyn Washington by phone at (202) 424-2265 or by e-mail at GWashington@dclawstudents.org.
