- The asylum process is long and arduous, that’s why pro bono volunteers Shaun Boedicker and Gammon Fain from Steptoe, LLP stepped up to support the DC Affordable Law Firm and their client. After 7 years, many hours spent on filings, and mentorship from DCALF, these pro bono champions won the asylum case on behalf of the client!
- Pro bono partnerships can amplify access to justice. When PayPal and Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP partnered with Tzedek DC to manage intake services it allowed Tzedek to increase in capacity and efficiency when providing advice, referral, and representation to clients.
- Often, pro bono and low bono service fills the gap in access to justice by providing access to an attorney in a case when the law does not provide one. Barb Burr followed this call, her goal in pro bono and low bono services is to make the next chapter of a person’s life easier with much needed support in navigating the legal system.
- DC’s strong unique pro bono community thrives with leaders paving the way. When DLA Piper’s Knowledge Management Team, led by Elisabeth Cappuyns and backed by Marjorie Schaffner, wanted to support pro bono, Lisa Dewey connected them with the DC Access to Justice Commission to create an inventory of over 1,200 self-help materials.
- Pro bono service connects attorneys to both their passions and their community. Annie Bonfiglio and Sarah Tunney joined DC Volunteer Lawyer’s Project and followed their passions to different substantive areas where they get to directly support clients.
- In Washington, D.C., the collaboration between La Clinica Del Pueblo and the Tahirih Justice Center is significantly impacting the lives of—Latiné immigrant survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). This medical-legal partnership represents a crucial lifeline for communities often excluded from traditional healthcare and legal support, particularly for those within the Latiné immigrant population.
- The motivation to do pro bono service is different for every person, many follow personal experience, professional passions, and a drive to do the most good. Tim Cordova’s story captures every aspect as he volunteers to help disabled people get access to the benefits they deserve.
- The parole process in Maryland is daunting, that’s why the Maryland Parole Partnership has stepped up to fill the justice gap. This program remains steadfast to support Maryland lifers.
